Environment Ministry says there is progress in courts expansion

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism is pleased with the progress in establishing special wildlife courts. In 2024, courts in Oshakati, Rundu, and Katima Mulilo handled 181 cases, finalizing 102. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda stated that efforts are ongoing to secure external funding to expand the initiative in collaboration with the Judiciary and the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Conservancies protest mining in Rhino sanctuary

Conservancies affected by the recent mining activities have been granted approval to hold a peaceful demonstration at the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism offices today. They will hand over a petition to the Executive Director of the Ministry against mining in their rhino sanctuary. Here is Laurencia Naobes the Manager for Uibasen-Twyfelfontein Conservancy.

Government culls wildlife for drought support

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has pledged to cull 723 animals as part of the government's drought relief program. The animals, including 30 hippos, 60 buffaloes, 50 impalas, 100 blue wildebeests, 300 zebras, 83 elephants, and 100 elands, will be sourced from national parks and communal areas with sustainable game populations. Government assesses extent of rhino poaching amid recent incidents

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism is conducting an assessment to determine the extent of rhino poaching following recent incidents in the Etosha National Park. Since the beginning of the year, 28 rhinos have been poached, with 19 in Etosha National Park and four on a private farm in the Otjozondjupa region. According to ministry spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, the ministry has called for an urgent high-level meeting on security.

Angolan national trampled by elephant

An Angolan national has died after being attacked by an elephant in the Uukolonkadi-Ruacana conservancy. Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, spokesperson Romeo Muyunda says that the deceased and others were attempting to chase the elephant from a field.
