The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has assured that the Eskom revenue application is currently under internal compliance evaluation. This follows a newspaper article where NERSA’s head of electricity regulation, Nhlanhla Gumede, claimed that a misinterpretation of the law led to excessive electricity tariff increases. Nersa’s spokesperson Charles Hlebela says Gumede's views are personal and do not reflect the regulator's official position:

AfriForum has welcomed the Gauteng High Court’s decision to block energy regulator NERSA's appeal for municipal electricity tariff hikes. The court deemed the planned increases unlawful, rejecting NERSA's application. AfriForum’s Morné Mostert emphasises the need for municipalities to submit cost-of-supply studies to justify tariff hikes. He says the court ordered that unauthorised rates be reverted pending submissions reviews:

National Energy Regulator of South Africa to Appeal High Court Order on Electricity Tariffs

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa will appeal a High Court order regarding the processing of licensed electricity distributors' tariff applications for the 2024/25 financial year. Spokesperson, Charles Hlebela says NERSA's decisions remain in effect, pending the appeal outcome, allowing distributors to implement the approved tariffs from 1 July.
