SADC Chair Mnangagwa Calls for Ceasefire in DRC

  Zimbabwean president and chairperson of the Southern African Development Community, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has urged a ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This follows reports of Rwandan-backed rebels capturing another town near Bukavu, despite their earlier ceasefire declaration. Heavy fighting continues, with Goma still under M23 rebel control. Mnangagwa's appeal comes ahead of the Sadec and East African Community summit in Tanzania this weekend:

  South Africa has welcomed the temporary ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, saying this is a crucial first step toward ending the severe humanitarian crisis faced by the 2.3-million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Blinken Urges Action to Address Sudan Conflict

  U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a direct appeal to nations aiding Sudan's warring factions or benefiting from the conflict. Reuters says that he called on them to shift their focus toward alleviating Sudanese suffering and using their influence to bring the war to an end. Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Blinken emphasized the need for concrete action to demonstrate genuine concern for Sudan's future.

DRC and Rwanda to implement M23 ceasefire plan

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda have agreed to implement activities aimed at ending an armed conflict led by the M23 rebels in the east of the DRC. The foreign ministers of both countries met in the Angolan capital of Luanda and agreed to end the conflict which started in 2021. Chris Ocamringa has more from Kinshasa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Tshisekedi pledges security for conflict-affected  citizens

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo has expressed his solidarity with thousands of Congolese citizens who've been displaced by a conflict in the east of the country and promised to restore security and protect them. President Felix Tshisekedi made the remarks in a televised address to mark the country's 64th Independence Anniversary on June 30.
