US and Russia begin talks in Saudi Arabia on Ukraine

The US and Russia are beginning talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio are in Riyadh for discussions Washington says will find out if Moscow is 'serious' about an end to the conflict. The African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government has voiced deep concern over the escalating crisis in eastern DRC. During the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, leaders called on M23 rebels to halt hostilities to prevent further loss of life. The Assembly reaffirmed that inclusive negotiations and political dialogue remain the only viable path to resolving conflicts across the continent.

The Goma Call for Peace has been launched to demand an immediate ceasefire and protection for civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Anglican bishop of Goma, Martin Gordon, highlighted the immense suffering following the M23 rebels taking control of the city, which has resulted in over 900 deaths. Gordon calls for an end to the fighting, withdrawal of foreign forces, and renewed peace talks between Rwanda and the DRC:

DRC and Rwanda officials to meet in Luanda

Government and military officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are set to meet in the Angolan capital of Luanda to hash out an agreement that seeks to end the M23 conflict in the east of the DRC. The agreement known as the Luanda Process seeks to end a conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over 2 million people since 2021.
