Flights resume at Washington National Airport

Flights have resumed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport after a mid-air collision that killed 67 people. A US army helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet plunged into the Potomac River on Wednesday night - nobody is believed to have survived. Recovery teams have pulled more than two dozen bodies from the icy water. Caroline Malone reports from the river's edge outside the airport in Northern Virginia:

Update On Military helicopter and regional jet mid-air collision in Washington

  Here an update on our 10am news story...A major search and rescue operation is underway in Washington DC after a military helicopter collided in mid-air with a commercial jetliner that was making its final approach to Ronald Reagan National Airport in the center of the city. A total of around 60 people are feared to have been on board the two aircraft. From Washington, Simon Marks reports.

Fatalities confirmed in Washington plane-helicopter crash

US authorities have confirmed there are fatalities after a commercial plane and military helicopter crashed at Ronald Reagan airport just out of Washington DC. At this stage the number of deaths is not known. A major search and rescue operation is underway, as teams search the Potomac River next to the airport where both aircraft crashed. Japan takes steps to clarify runway instructions after Haneda crash

Officials in Japan are implementing emergency steps to avoid collisions at Tokyo’s Haneda airport after two aircraft crashed on the tarmac last week. Investigators believe vague updates from the control tower may have led a pilot to mistakenly believe he had clearance to enter the runway while another aircraft was landing.
