DA Raises Alarm Over Poor Perimeter Security at SA Prisons

The DA says it is concerning that nearly half of South Africa’s correctional facilities lack adequate perimeter fencing. A parliamentary question reply from minister for Correctional Services, Pieter Groenewald, revealed that an estimated one-billion-rand is required to address the fencing deficiencies at 120 prisons nationwide. The DA’s, Kabelo Kgobisa-Ngcaba, says the lack of specific completion dates for any of these projects, attributed to funding uncertainties, raises serious concerns:

In S.A, the DA has highlighted the urgent need for intervention in prisons as they face a contraband crisis. The party's Kabelo Kgobisa-Ngcabawith says nearly one-thousand-kilograms of drugs, 41-thousand cell phones, and thousands of weapons have been seized in 12 months. She has urged Correctional Services minister Pieter Groenewald to escalate the issue to cabinet to resolve porous facilities:
