The United States with coalition forces including the UK have begun air strikes against Houthi rebel targets in Yemen. There are fears the attacks could further widen the Middle East conflict that began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th. Nick Harper reports from Washington.
South Africa’s Transnet has confirmed that no container vessels are expected to anchor at SA ports, despite major shipping lines rerouting their vessels via the Cape of Good Hope route due to rebel attacks in the Red Sea region. According to CNN, some 100 ships have been attacked in the last month—about 15 percent of world shipping traffic transits via the Suez Canal.
BP has temporarily halted oil shipments through the Red Sea due to recent attacks by Houthi rebels. According to the BBC, the decision was brought on by the deteriorating security situation and follows similar actions by other freight companies targeted by the rebels in Yemen. The Red Sea is a critical route for global oil, fuel, and consumer goods shipments.
The Pentagon is investigating reports that a US warship and some commercial vessels came under attack in the Red Sea. Yemen's Houthi rebels said they attacked two Israeli ships off the Yemeni coast over the war in Gaza. Sally Patterson reports. ENG THE PENTAGON
