Several feared dead and scores injured at Kumbh Mela in India

  Several people are feared dead and at least 30 injured after a crowd rush at the Kumbh Mela. The Hindu gathering is touted to be the biggest in the world ever, with close to 100 million estimatedly attending the event this week. The festival takes place at the confluence of the three holy rivers in Hinduism. Ishan Garg has the latest from New Delhi.

118 Illegal Miners Rescued in South Africa’s Stillfontein

  South Africa's National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure has rescued 118 illegal miners in Stilfontein, North West, as of yesterday, with 36 confirmed dead. Rescue efforts are ongoing using a specialist-operated cage. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe stated that 82 arrests have been made for illegal mining, trespassing, and immigration violations.

  The GOOD Party in S.A says the Stilfontein mining crisis in North West is a humanitarian disaster requiring urgent government intervention. The party accuses the government of violating constitutional rights by blocking rescue efforts and failing to address the socio-economic issues driving illegal mining. GOOD secretary-general Brett Herron, warns it become one of South Africa’s worst humanitarian failures:

Rescue efforts under way after earthquake in Tibet

  The search for survivors entered a second day on Wednesday after a strong earthquake killed at least 126 people and damaged more than 3,000 buildings in a remote part of the Chinese region of Tibet, near Everest. Another 188 people were injured after the earthquake hit the foothills of the Himalayas at around 9am local time on Tuesday, according to Chinese state media. Laura Westbrook reports.
