Seismologists to Gather in Namibia for Major Conference

Seismologists from across Africa will convene in Namibia for the 4th General Assembly of the African Seismological Commission, hosted by the Mines and Energy Ministry next week. Geologist Mako Sitali highlighted that the event slated for February 24 to 28 will cover earthquake monitoring, seismic technology, and Namibia’s role in the international seismic monitoring system.

Tsunami warning called off after Northern California quake

US officials have called off a tsunami warning, that was issued in the wake of a strong earthquake off the coast of Northern California, Millions of people had been instructed to evacuate coastal areas and head to higher ground. Ira Spitzer reports from San Francisco.

Earthquakes Hit Okahandja and Opuwo

  The Mines and Energy ministry reports that two earthquakes that occurred over the weekend in Namibia. The first tremor was near Gross Barmen in the Okahandja district, while the second struck 10 kilometers southwest of Opuwo in Kunene. Both events were recorded by local and South African seismic centres. Anna Salkeus from the mines ministry:
