Reuters says environmentalists in Nigeria on Tuesday criticized the government's plan to restart oil production in Ogoniland, calling for a suspension until thorough discussions with local communities are held. Ogoniland, located in the oil-rich Niger River delta's Rivers state, has been a hotspot for pollution. A $1 billion cleanup effort began in 2018, following a 2011 UN Environmental Programme study.
Barrick Gold announced it will suspend mining operations in Mali after the government seized three metric tons of gold from the Loulo-Gounkoto complex, valued at $245 million. Reuters says the gold was reportedly flown out by helicopter over the weekend. In a letter to the government, Barrick stated it is now compelled to temporarily shut down the mines.
MK Party has suspended two members after they unlawfully registered the wrong candidate for the by-elections in Msunduzi Ward 2, Mgungundlovu Region in KwaZulu-Natal. The candidate, who was unlawfully registered has also been suspended for accepting the nomination, despite having lost the internal elections. Load-shedding in South Africa will continue to be suspended until further notice, marking 22 consecutive days without blackouts. The last time Eskom achieved a similar milestone was in June 2022, with 20 consecutive days without load-shedding. The power utility’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says the continued suspension of load-shedding is a result of sustained generation capacity, adequate emergency reserves, and reduced electricity demand from the grid:
