Nigerian Environmentalists Oppose Oil Production Resumption in Ogoniland

  Reuters says environmentalists in Nigeria on Tuesday criticized the government's plan to restart oil production in Ogoniland, calling for a suspension until thorough discussions with local communities are held. Ogoniland, located in the oil-rich Niger River delta's Rivers state, has been a hotspot for pollution. A $1 billion cleanup effort began in 2018, following a 2011 UN Environmental Programme study.

MK Party Suspends Members Over By-Election Candidate Error

  MK Party has suspended two members after they unlawfully registered the wrong candidate for the by-elections in Msunduzi Ward 2, Mgungundlovu Region in KwaZulu-Natal. The candidate, who was unlawfully registered has also been suspended for accepting the nomination, despite having lost the internal elections. The MK Party’s, Sipho Tyira, says the national disciplinary committee will now proceed with the disciplinary inquiry against the implicated members:

Load-shedding in South Africa will continue to be suspended until further notice, marking 22 consecutive days without blackouts. The last time Eskom achieved a similar milestone was in June 2022, with 20 consecutive days without load-shedding. The power utility’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says the continued suspension of load-shedding is a result of sustained generation capacity, adequate emergency reserves, and reduced electricity demand from the grid:

    Sarah Chepchirchir became the latest Kenyan athlete to be banned for doping, receiving an eight-year suspension on Wednesday after she tested positive for a banned substance for the second time.
