Federal criminal cases against Donald Trump dropped

  US President-elect Donald Trump looks set to escape trial for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election result after investigators filed a motion to drop the case. Special counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the charges against the former President due to a long-standing Justice Department policy that bars the prosecution of a sitting President. Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai stands trial

  Media tycoon Jimmy Lai is pleading not guilty to breaching the Beijing imposed national security law in a Hong Kong court. The 76-year-old founder of the now-closed tabloid Apple Daily is accused of colluding with foreign forces, a charge that could carry a sentence of up to life in prison. Laura Westbrook reports.

French screen legend Gerard Depardieu went on trial on Monday charged with sexual assault. The 75-year-old denies assaulting two women on a film set in 2021. His legal team said he was not well enough to be physically present in court on the opening day.

French far-right leader goes on trial

The French far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen has gone on trial for embezzlement in Paris. She and 26 other National Rally party politicians deny misusing European Union funds. Ross Cullen reports.     According to the Associated Press, Le Pen denied violating any rules. The veteran politician told journalists that she remained confident. She vowed to present the judges with “extremely serious and extremely solid arguments.″
