After 171 days of war in Gaza, the United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties, and leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire. The United Nations General Assembly has adopted the first global resolution on artificial intelligence which aims to encourage the protection of personal data, monitoring AI for risks, and safeguarding human rights. While it is a nonbinding resolution, according to Linda Thomas Greenfield, the US' Ambassador to the UN, it is just the first step in ensuring AI technology is used and developed responsibly.
Last-minute negotiations have postponed a UN vote on a draft resolution for a Gaza ceasefire, as Hamas leader plans talks in Egypt. Egypt and Qatar facilitated a truce last month, resulting in a week-long ceasefire and the release of hostages. While Israeli leaders initially rejected a new ceasefire, President Isaac Herzog stated on Tuesday that the country is now prepared for a pause to facilitate additional hostage releases.
