The French Embassy, together with the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre, the National Olympic and Paralympic Committees and the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service, is pleased to announce the upcoming event on March 14th, in the morning, at the FNCC, against the backdrop of the third Relay around the World in the run-up to Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

March 14th is the date chosen for the 3rd Relay around the World: all day long, from time zone to time zone, starting from the Western Pacific and ending in the same ocean, the virtual baton will be passed around the world in order to illustrate the ideal of global solidarity in sport that the Games represent.

As on 6 April 2022, for the first Relay, and on 14 March 2023, for the second one, the virtual baton is going to pass through Windhoek.

This third Relay will involve, together with the Embassy of France, the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service, the Namibian National Olympic and Paralympic Committees as well as the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre.

While celebrating sport and the Games as a whole, this year’s event will put a particular emphasis on parasports, Paralympic athletes and children with disabilities.

Multiple workshops will be taking place at various places in the FNCC in order to explain and experience parasports. Between 9:15 and 9:30, a plaque bearing the name of Johanna Benson, the first Namibian gold medalist in the Games (London 2012), will be unveiled , in her presence, on the upper terrace of the FNCC.

The event is set to start at 8:30 a.m., before we get the virtual baton from the previous time zone at 9:00 and hand it over to the following time zone at 10:00. It should come to an end by 12:00, approx.
