Namibia’s T11 female sprinter Lahja Ishitile missed out on a spot in the final of the T11 women’s 100 meters (m) after finishing fifth overall on Monday at the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan.
A total of 11 para-athletes and seven guides are representing Namibia at the 2024 Kobe World Para Athletics Championships.
Ishitile and her guide Sem Shimanda won a bronze medal in the T11 400m sprint on Sunday. However, on Monday, they finished second in the 100m, despite running an African record of 12.39 seconds in heat two of the 100m sprint.
They finished second behind Chinese sprinter Zhou Guohua and her guide GU Dengpu, who clocked a seasonal best of 12.37 seconds.
Liu Cuiqing of China and her guide Chen Shengming ran the fastest time of 12.10 seconds, setting a championship record from all three heats held on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, Namibia’s T37 female sprinter Johanna Benson qualified for the final of the 100m sprint after finishing third in her heat with a time of 14.68 seconds. Taylor Swanson of the United States of America won that heat with a time of 12.99 seconds, which was her new personal best and the fastest time from the two heats that were competed for on the day.
T13 sprinter Johannes Nambala, who reached the T13 100m final on Sunday, is also expected to compete in the final on Monday during the evening sessions of the championships.
