Namibian Police Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo, has urged residents and visitors to prioritise safety and responsibility during the Independence Day celebrations and upcoming holidays.
Shikongo said the 36th Independence Day on Saturday will be followed by the Easter holidays from 03 to 06 April, as well as other public holidays leading into the school holidays in May.
He noted that while festive periods are marked by celebrations and family gatherings, it also results in increased traffic on national roads. Shikongo called on all road users to exercise tolerance and behave responsibly.
Drivers are urged to avoid speeding, drunk driving, and reckless conduct; while ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and seatbelts are always worn. Shikongo said the police will intensify operations across the country, with increased visibility on roads and in communities to maintain law and order.
Members of the public are also encouraged to remain vigilant and secure their properties, as well as participate in community crime prevention initiatives such as neighborhood watch groups.
He further called on parents and guardians to supervise children closely during the school holidays and discourage risky behavior, including alcohol abuse.
Shikongo wishes all citizens and visitors a safe, peaceful, and crime-free Independence Day.
