SWAPO veteran, Jerry Ekandjo met with the party’s secretary general, Sophia Shaningwa, a day after President Hage Geingob’s death to discuss the possibility of holding an extraordinary congress within three months. Reports indicate that this meeting followed Ekandjo’s discovery that the politburo had decided to postpone the congress. Ekandjo, who has been advocating for an extraordinary congress after Geingob’s death, insisted to Shaningwa that it must take place within the proposed timeframe.
