ECN records high voter registration rates in Kunene and Oshana

today5 August, 2024

Background

The Electoral Commission of Namibia has announced a considerable breakthrough in the recent voter registration drive held from 29 July to 1 August 2024. A total of 152,472 eligible voters were registered, averaging 38,002 registrations per day. This represents the highest turnout since the commencement of the General Registration of Voters (GRV), with a 91% turnout of eligible voters.

The Kunene and Oshana regions recorded the highest registration rates at 97%, while the Kavango regions and Hardap had the lowest rates. ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka expressed satisfaction with the turnout, saying, “We are quite satisfied with the turnout. What we’ll follow now is that we’ll start with the demobilization of the teams, which has started already. I think we are done with the demobilization of all teams.”

Siluka further explained the next steps in the process: “Then we’ll go straight into processing the data, and then do the data segregation, and then produce the provisional register, which will then be published in the government gazette. We just want to inform the nation that there will be no extension. So what we’ll follow now, after we have published the voters’ register for objection, and then it will be available for the political parties, as well as the public at large, and that will be announced at a later stage.”

The ECN’s efforts reflect a robust participation from Namibian citizens, ensuring a comprehensive and accurate voters register for future electoral processes.
