The EU Delegation to Namibia, in collaboration with five EU Member States’ Embassies and the Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO), hosted a lively International Youth Day 2024 celebration at the Windhoek Buy Back Centre in Katutura yesterday. The event featured an energetic dance competition, offering a platform for Namibian youth to showcase their creativity and enthusiasm.

The celebration saw participation from seven schools and three local dance groups, highlighting the artistic talents of Windhoek’s young performers. Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School claimed first place, followed by People’s Primary School in second, and DC Dance Crew in third. The spirited performances created a memorable experience for attendees.

The event was honored by the presence of Acting Director from the Ministry of Sports, Youth and National Service, Mr. Mikka Asino, and EU Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Ana Beatriz Martins. Representatives from EU Member States including Finland, France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal, as well as over 100 youths, joined in the festivities.

EU Ambassador Martins emphasized the day’s significance, stating, “This day is dedicated to honoring the youth of Namibia, encouraging their full participation in societal development, fostering social innovation, and addressing inequalities. Empowered youth are crucial to a free, democratic, and prosperous society.” She reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting youth both within Europe and globally, stressing the importance of giving young people the opportunity to shape the future.

Director Asino also addressed the gathering, noting, “International Youth Day is a time to reflect on the essential role young people play in shaping our future. In Namibia, where youth constitute the majority of our population, their ideas and energy are vital to national development. Our youth are the heartbeat of our nation, driving innovation and change.”

The International Youth Day 2024 celebration was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the EU Delegation, the five EU Member States’ Embassies, the EU Youth Sounding Board Team, and the OYO Dance Company, demonstrating a shared commitment to empowering and celebrating Namibian youth.
