The City of Windhoek has announced the exemption of some properties from paying assessment rates for the 2025 – 2026 financial year.

City spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya told NewsOnOne that, non-profit organizations such as schools, churches and welfare groups play a direct role in serving communities, hence the public benefits indirectly from such exemptions.

The municipality received 158 applications, all of which were inspected to ensure compliance with legal requirements; however, 13 applications did not qualify for exemption due to late submission.

Amutenya said by receiving exemptions, the organisations are able to offer reduced service fees as their operational costs also become reduced.

Amutenya further explains the beneficiaries for the exemptions.

Amutenya cautioned that exemptions will be revoked if properties are found not to comply with exemption conditions, such as a property not being used for the purposes other than declared or being rented out.
