today20 January, 2026

Background

The African Union has approved a new plan to coordinate and bolster mediation efforts aimed at ending the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The decision was made during a two-day summit in Lomé, Togo, reflecting growing concern over the humanitarian and security crisis in the region.

Chris Ocamringa reports from Kinshasa that while the plan sets a framework for action, its success will depend on timely implementation and cooperation from both national authorities and armed groups. The African Union stressed that continued instability in eastern DRC threatens regional stability and economic development.

The initiative seeks to unify African-led diplomatic channels, increase engagement with local stakeholders, and provide a structured approach to peace negotiations. Leaders emphasized the importance of regional collaboration to prevent further escalation and support sustainable conflict resolution.
