The JP Brand Primary School, located about 50km outside Walvis Bay, will soon have their worn water tank support structures repaired.
The organisers of the Marathon Des Sables (MDS) event, hosted last year in the Namib Desert, informed the school that N$20 000 from funds raised during the international marathon will be availed for the construction of new water tank structures that will replace the existing old ones.
The owner of Sandwich Dune Tours and Safari, Kenneth Kapitako, who helped organise the marathon last year, noted that the organisers decided to give back to the community, as the event was hosted in the Topnaar area.
The school and hostel, which accommodates over 250 learners, has several problems, of which water is the main concern.
“We had a discussion with the school principal and was informed that the school mainly has water challenges. Water is essential for humans and children’s needs are important. They need water in their tanks which must be supported by strong structures. After sharing this with the organisers, we felt we had to assist with new structures,” he said.
Kapitako aIso appeals to other companies in Namibia to come on board and help the school.
MDS is an international organisation that hosts several formats of ultra-endurance foot races, most of them held in food self-sufficiency conditions.
