Two dead after Rovos Rail train derails near Naute

Two people have died following a train derailment involving a Rovos Rail service near Naute, about 100 kilometres from Keetmanshoop, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

TransNamib confirmed in a press release the tragic rail accident occurred at approximately 05:00.

Chief Executive Officer, Desmond Van Jaarsveld, said the emergency response plan was activated immediately, and response teams were dispatched to the scene without delay.

He said the priority was the safety and wellbeing of all employees and passengers, with urgent medical care provided to those affected.

Survivors are receiving ongoing support.

Van Jaarsveld confirmed that two fatalities were recorded as a result of the accident.

Emergency response teams, together with regional medical services and the police, remained on site to assist survivors, attend to anyone requiring medical attention, and secure the area.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is underway. TransNamib says it is cooperating fully with authorities and will inform key stakeholders once the investigation is finalised.

Appropriate measures will be implemented to prevent a recurrence.

The company extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
