SWAPO veteran, Jerry Ekandjo met with the party's secretary general, Sophia Shaningwa, a day after President Hage Geingob's death to discuss the possibility of holding an extraordinary congress within three months. SWAPO backbencher Jerry Ekandjo and former works ministry permanent secretary Peter Mwatile recently met with SWAPO vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to advocate for the party to convene an extraordinary congress. This move comes despite the party's clarification, conveyed by its lawyer Sisa Namandje, that SWAPO's constitution does not explicitly mandate an extraordinary congress to be held three months after the death of a sitting president.
SWAPO's Deputy Secretary General, Uahekua Herunga, has contested former Cabinet minister Jerry Ekandjo's suggestion that the position of SWAPO president at the upcoming extraordinary congress should be reserved for men. Ekandjo argued for gender balance but also recommended Swapo Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's resignation if she aims to contest for the party presidency. Herunga, a beneficiary of the 50:50 gender balance Swapo policy, believes Ekandjo's perspective lacks comprehensive consideration.
Former Cabinet minister Jerry Ekandjo has expressed his belief that the position of Swapo party president at the upcoming extraordinary congress should be exclusively reserved for men to achieve gender balance. Furthermore, Ekandjo called for the resignation of Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah if she intends to challenge for the party presidency. Political Analyst Ndumba Kamwanya gave his opinion on this matter.
