Lions Roaming Kavango East Region Prompt School Closures

The Environment, Forestry, and Tourism ministry confirms three lion sightings in Mukwe constituency, Kavango East Region, with tracks indicating movement towards Mbwata Village. Monitoring efforts suggest a split in the group, with only male and female tracks observed. In response, four schools in the Mukwe Circuit have temporarily halted classes. 28 Rhino Poachings recorded in 2024

The Environment, Forestry, and Tourism ministry has reported a total of 28 rhinos poached since the beginning of the year, with no cases of elephant poaching recorded. In a press statement released on Monday, MEFT spokesperson Romeo Muyunda disclosed that 19 of the rhinos were poached in the Etosha National Park, with 10 discovered during dehorning operations conducted throughout March. Environment Ministry Denounces Illegal Poaching Incident in Mangetti National Park

The Environment, Forestry, and Tourism Ministry strongly condemns the illegal poaching activity discovered within the Mangetti National Park, where three members of the NDF were apprehended with dried game meat from Eland, Kudu, and Wildebeest, lacking the necessary permits. The perpetrators are scheduled to appear in the Rundu Magistrate Court to face charges. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda.

Environment Ministry flags increase in Pangolin trafficking

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism has confiscated 18 pangolin skins, 12 live pangolins, and 146 pangolin scales from September to November this year. This resulted in 23 criminal cases, with 38 suspects arrested, surpassing combined cases for elephants and rhinos. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda says the majority of incidents took place in the northern regions of the country.
