The Namibian Revenue Agency (NamRa) has revealed a fraudulent scheme connected to its ongoing Mass Tax Refund Initiative, resulting in the unlawful payout of over N$666,000 in tax refunds. The fraudulent activity, which was uncovered between January and April of this year, has led to the suspension of one of NamRA’s employees and the reversal of a secondment involving a Ministry of Finance official.

Chief of Strategic Communications and Support Engagements at NamRa, Steven Ndorokaze, shared details about the investigation. Ndorokaze confirmed that three additional suspects have been arrested and appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court last week in connection with the scam.

The agency’s investigation uncovered that some of the individuals whose details were used in the fraudulent scheme were unaware of how their information was being utilised. NamRA is now urging the public to be vigilant and cautious with their personal information. Ndorokaze emphasised the importance of understanding the purpose of any data shared and ensuring it is only given to trusted individuals or organisations.

He cautioned the public to be aware that, in some cases, individuals unknowingly had their details registered for tax refunds and received payments they did not expect or understand.

The NamRa spokesperson stressed that it is crucial for the public to protect their banking and personal details to prevent misuse.
