Reuters reports indicate that the World Health Organization is investigating two outbreaks of an unknown illness in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo, which have resulted in over 50 deaths in recent weeks. As of February 16, there have been 431 reported cases and 53 fatalities in remote villages across two health zones in Equateur province, according to a WHO bulletin.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Reuters, has formally requested military assistance from Chad to combat the escalating insurgency by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in its eastern provinces. A Chadian official and a source from the Congolese presidency confirmed the request, following a meeting between Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration and Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno on Tuesday.
South African Political analyst Kenneth Mokgathle has criticized the recent African Union summit for failing to propose concrete solutions or interventions for conflict-affected nations.
